Proverbs. Almost all cultures have these brief little bundles of accumulated wisdom and socially accepted advice. Short phrases or sentences that are intuitively understood and are often witty, analogical, and rhythmically repetitive, proverbs pack an amazingly strong punch for their small size. Transmitted orally within a culture, the structure of proverbs makes them remarkably easy to remember, which provides stability and faithful reproduction over generations and at the same time allows for interpretive mutability as cultural norms change over time.
